Tril's blog

What is a blog? definition

Uh.. I'm starting this blog. Newer stuff will be on top, of course [changed my mind, see next update below]. All times in UTC, because I want everyone to use UTC on the internet and to think in UTC on the internet.

I'm using plain HTML, because all the blogs I found use some blogger.com or blogspot.com to update their sites. I have problems with those services,

  1. insecure FTP to update - They can easily fix this, and will soon, then this complaint will be moot.
  2. They're not releasing the source to their sites under a free license. They're trying to get more and more people to go through their central server. One must wonder why. I see no use for their server. I can run a blog myself. If they don't want to help me by providing me the software they use [so I can update blogs using my own servers only], I have no use for them at all.

The main thing that finally made me put this blog up was I was reading this article: Open Source movement fueled by community spirit from /.

[In response to the concept of DRM (digital rights management) inside a computer, that does what the author of some data wants rather than what the owner of the computer wants, ]

Any attempt to make a computer that takes control away from the user, will fail for the simple reason that it's not as useful as a true, general-purpose computer.

I've wanted to put up a blog for a while but was putting it off since I didn't like editing plain HTML. Lately I'm just resigned to dealing with the incompetencies of existing systems, so I can update this manually for now. I'll probably write some script to help soon, which I will release for free.

Oh, putting newer stuff at the top is kind of silly.

For background, for people who don't know me, you want to look at Bespin and TUNES... Bespin is my server that is for free hosting and TUNES is a project for a reflective OS. I'm the webmaster for TUNES, and TUNES is hosted on Bespin. Also go to my home page link below to browse other stuff I'm interested in, and my bookmarks page. I work at NAS.com and I really love my job but I'm not going to give you the URL because the website has not been updated since 1995 and I can't honestly recommend that people go to it. The new site under development is much better already. Oh, all right, here's the link, but look at the new one first.

Someone emailed me today saying:

I had to respond saying

If you download 1515 songs, or make 1515 songs shared, you are a federal felon according to this analysis: http://www.politechbot.com/p-02305.html (from Slashdot) [www.politechbot.com requires disabling ECN]

Copyright is invalid because it relies on application of force, which is inherently immoral. However you should respect the wishes of copyright holders, to follow the golden rule. Since there is no way to stop people from copying bits without application of force, the only moral thing to do is give your bits away for free. If you want to make money, you may ask for donations, and you are free to stop working if you receive none.
